A dentist botched implant surgery on a patient, affecting his speaking ability and causing him constant pain, the Dental Council heard. Anthony Tse Siu-kwong, who is a specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery, was accused of unprofessional conduct when he did the dental implant surgery on his patient, Yeung Pak-keung, in May 2006 at his Central clinic.
The council heard that Tse failed to properly assess and determine the position and depth of the implant placement before performing the surgery on Yeung.
The teeth were planted too deep and suppressed the nerves, causing constant pain to the patient. Tse continued his drilling on Yeung's gums for implantation of the artificial teeth despite Yeung complaining to him about the pain.
Yeung went to Tse's clinic in Central to receive two artificial teeth in his right lower gum. After the surgery, Yeung felt increasing pain on the right side of his face and constant pain around the implanted teeth.
Yeung went to another dentist, who told him his nerves had been harmed by the implanted teeth, causing the pain.
Yeung said the failed surgery affected his speaking ability, and he is asking for compensation of more than HK$1 million.
Tse was accused of disregarding his professional responsibility to adequately treat and care for his patient. The hearing was also told that for the past three years Yeung had been asking Tse for compensation of between HK$1 million and HK$5 million. Otherwise, Yeung would report the incident to the media. Yeung denied this yesterday.
The hearing continues next Thursday.
