The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong yesterday urged animal lovers to adopt abandoned dogs and thereby keep strays off the roads.
But DAB standing committee member Chan Hok-fung said the adoption of pets isn't something to be decided on in the spur of the moment, as it's a life-long commitment.
The alliance's Southern Branch yesterday held a Pet Adoption Day at the Aberdeen Promenade, at which people could register or receive information.
Using the slogan "Love yourself, Love your life, Love the Earth," the branch hopes to spread the message of a harmonious and valuable life for humans as well as pets.

"I feel sorry when I see abandoned pets. By organizing today's event, we hope to spread the message of new life to pet owners, as well as to those who intend to adopt pets," said Chan, adding the lives of animals are equally precious.
However, he advises people to think carefully before adopting a pet.
"To own a pet is a life-long responsibility. Many people adopt pets just to satisfy a moment of happiness. Many animals end up being abandoned by their owners. Adopting a stray animal is a love-sharing action, in addition to granting the animal a new life."
