A woman whose mother allegedly died while staying at a Hong Kong Disneyland hotel in September is threatening to sue the theme park, accusing it of ignoring the welfare of its guests.

Disney denies the accusation.

Joanna Boey, a 40-year-old investment consultant who has lived in the United States for the past 10 years, said her mother might still be alive if Disney had provided a proper medical service.

"I want to take this case to court," said Boey, adding that she was now in discussion with Hong Kong lawyers.

Boey's 82-year-old mother, Nge Yoi-chan - who was born in Hong Kong and then moved to Singapore 70 years ago - visited Hong Kong with her son and daughter-in-law last September and stayed at the Disney Hollywood Hotel, where she fell ill. She was declared dead after arriving at Princess Margaret Hospital.

Boey alleged that hotel staff were not sufficiently trained to provide proper medical advice and service, nor did the hotel have proper medical facilities, such as an in-house doctor.

It even asked their customers to call 999 by themselves, Boey said.

She claimed the ambulance was not allowed entry at the park's front door and had to get to the hotel through a rear entrance.

This echoes a controversy last year, when Disney officials forced two government health inspectors to take off their hats and badges before entering the theme park to conduct a food poisoning investigation.

A Disney spokeswoman rejected the accusations, insisting its first-aid trained personnel at the hotel had attended to Nge and immediately called an ambulance.

"We would like to again express our deepest sympathy and sincerest condolences to the family for their loss," the spokeswoman added.

Boey said she has a tape recording of conversations between Disney hotel staff and a customer service representative of SOS International - a customer service provider of medical help for travelers who purchase emergency medical insurance from AIG.
