A final over and out from 'Vile Rat'

Friday, September 14, 2012

Will the real Sean Smith step forward?

The US foreign service officer killed in an attack in Libya had another side - the 34-year-old was known as the player "Vile Rat" in the multiplayer game EVE Online.

This features more than 400,000 players captaining starships, trading virtual goods, engaging in corporate espionage and electing a government of real-world players.

As "Vile Rat," he was a cunning diplomat whose head was shorn, just like Smith's.

Several virtual space stations in EVE have been renamed in his honor as condolence messages pour in.

Alex "The Mittani " Gianturco detailed his final online interaction.

Smith was on the instant messaging service Jabber and posted two words - an expletive and "GUNFIRE" - before he disconnected. He is survived by his wife and two children.
