China Mobile (0941) chairman Wang Jianzhou said he expected the mainland government to consolidate the telecom industry but not break up China Mobile.

"An investment bank's report said China Mobile would be broken up. That aroused my concern as that was wrong," said Wang.

According to a JPMorgan report, Wang told investors his biggest concern about government intervention in the telecoms restructuring was that China Mobile would be broken up.

Beijing has yet to announce its plan for reorganizing the telecom industry.

Wang said he did not have any updates about the restructuring.

"I believe the government will only consolidate the telecom industry by having smaller operators merging with larger companies to increase their competitiveness in the international arena," said Wang.

He stressed China Mobile will only be "stronger and bigger."

There are four major telecom operators in the mainland, which are all listed in Hong Kong.

In addition, the chairman of the industry's largest mainland player said he hoped China Mobile would list on the A-share market.

Wang said that as the company was listed in Hong Kong as a red chip and not as an H share, it took more time to go through legal procedures.

Meanwhile, China Unicom (0762) chairman and chief executive Chang Xiaobing said he had not heard anything about industry restructuring.

Chang said the issuing of 3G licenses is under discussion but he believed there will not be many licenses issued.

He is also confident telecom services will go smoothly during next year's Olympic Games.

Shares of all mainland telecoms did not perform well on Friday. China Mobile fell to HK$137 from HK$137.90, China Unicom fell to HK$15.78 from HK$16.16, China Telecom (0728) fell to HK$5.42 from HK$5.48, and China Netcom (0906) fell to HK$21.40 from HK$21.95.
