To mark the arrival of the Subaru fifth- generation Legacy in Hong Kong, distributor MotorImage invited the press to Legacy's 20th anniversary launch.

Subaru engineers have raised the bar with the new series, incorporating Subaru's signature outstanding handling and performance into a bold new package with more of everything: more luxury, more displacement, more power, more safety, more environmental consciousness.

Among numerous accolades the new Subaru Legacy range has already received is the 2009-2010 Japan Car of the Year Special Award - "Best Value," with the jury giving high marks for the "combination of affordable prices, superb all wheel drive system and horizontally-opposed boxer engine, meticulously honed over the last 20 years."

In Hong Kong now, the range includes the Legacy 2.5GT Sedan and Wagon and the Legacy Outback 2.5i, each bigger, bolder, more beautiful and enhanced right across the board. With larger seats and cargo capacity, the new range provides both greater comfort and convenience.

The total vehicle performance of the fifth-generation Subaru Legacy range has been advanced through the introduction of a brand new package.

The Subaru Legacy 2.5GT Sedan/ Wagon features a five-speed automatic transmission and variable torque distribution all wheel drive, which instantly distributes engine torque to all four wheels, while focusing on the rear wheels, to suit the prevailing road conditions.

A new exhaust dual active valve control system opt
imizes cam timing to improve fuel efficiency and power output. The model also features SI-Drive, offering Intelligent, Sport and Sport Sharp modes.

The Outback 2.5i features the new Subaru Lineartronic continuously variable transmission which, longitudinally paired with all wheel drive and using a chain instead of a belt, allows a greater span of overall ratios for improved performance and efficiency, and a faster response to throttle input. The Lineartronic system helps maintain the most favorable rpm range at any driving speed, providing a balance of both power and fuel economy.

Improved safety performance and driving control come in the form of the vehicle dynamics control system, and a newly-developed cradle engine mounting system that reduces vibration and noise and provides enhanced stability for a more refined ride. A double wishbone suspension layout has been used in the rear to create the level of driving comfort motorists have come to expect from the Legacy.

The new range also offers peace of mind, with the evolved "ring-shaped reinforcement frame" providing higher impact-absorbing capacity, while each model comes equipped with dual front, side and curtain airbags.

The all-new Legacy has earned international recognition for its safety, including being chosen as one of top safety picks by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety in the United States and receiving top five-star ratings in both the Australian and the European new car assessment programs.

As well as the comfort and convenience of a more spacious interior and luggage compartment, the electronic parking brake makes more efficient use of the area around the center console, while the multi-way electric seat with two-position memory, the paddle shift gear change on the steering wheel and hill-hold functions all contribute to heightened driving pleasure.

For a driver or a passenger, the new models bring unsurpassed comfort, safety and handling. The Subaru Legacy has truly come of age with its fifth- generation range.

The guest of honor for the celebration was Tan Chong International director Glenn Tan, who had flown in from Singapore.
