Pride of Argentina

Diogenes

Friday, November 06, 2009

To the surprise of many not in the trade, Argentina has been ranked the fifth- largest wine-producing nation in the world.

It produces 1.5 billion liters annually - less than a third of the production of Italy, which has regained its position as the world's top producer.

Wine production in Argentina dates back to the mid-16th century, with the rise of the city of Mendoza in 1561 a crucial landmark in its development. The Mendoza region remains very important, accounting for 70 percent of the country's total production.

It is certainly one of the most spectacular wine-growing locations to visit, with lines of grape vines stretching toward the snow-capped peaks of the Andes mountains. Mount Aconcagua, the highest point in the Americas, is close by.

Grapes are ideally grown at least a thousand meters above sea level. If the average rainfall is only 20 centimeters a year, irrigation is essential. Fortunately for Argentina, glaciers high in the Andes have provided a constant supply of water for centuries. And with the dry conditions greatly reducing the likelihood of rot and fungal diseases, there is little need for chemical sprays. As a result many producers make organic wines.

There is a great profusion of grape varieties on offer in Argentina, reflecting the origins of immigrants who arrived in the early part of the 20th century. Large numbers arrived from France, Spain and Italy but there are also influences from Switzerland and elsewhere.

The Bodega Norto
n winery was founded by an Englishman in the 19th century and is now owned by an Austrian company, neatly encapsulating the cosmopolitan nature of the industry.

Every New World wine producer has its calling card when it comes to red wine: California has zinfandel, for Australia it's shiraz, and South Africa has pinotage.

Chile has learned to take pride in its carmenere after years of passing it off as merlot. And with Argentina, it has to be malbec, which finds its natural partner in the steaks that make dining in that country such an enjoyable experience.

With declining levels of wine consumption in the home market, Argentina is aggressively targeting export markets. This is a product of the La Rioja cooperative, a giant of the Argentine wine industry. Clean, fresh varietal characters and outstanding value at this price.
