New Intel chips boost security

Monday, August 27, 2007

Intel, the world's biggest semiconductor maker, said it will introduce a version of its vPro product aimed at helping companies better protect their machines from hackers and viruses.

Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Lenovo will make notebook and desktop computers using the technology, which includes a processor, other chips and software, vice president Robert Crooke said.

Intel has sold more than four million of the vPro products since they went on sale a year ago. The chipmaker is trying to persuade companies to upgrade their systems by adding features that make computers easier to maintain.

The updated product has filters that can detect attacks by analyzing patterns of data. Managers can also switch on machines without being in front of them and access their contents when the operating system is not working. The product protects against viruses that circumvent traditional security software.
