The niece of a prominent Court of Final Appeal judge has been arrested after slapping a police officer in the early hours yesterday.

Amina Mariam Bokhary, 34, the niece of Justice Kemal Bokhary, was arrested for assaulting the police and refusing to take a breathalyzer test.

She was released on HK$5,000 bail and ordered to report back to the police at the end of next month.

The officer was sent to Ruttonjee Hospital for a checkup and later discharged.

Shortly after midnight, Amina Bokhary, who was driving up Stubbs Road, collided head-on with a coach that was traveling downhill in the opposite direction, near Shiu Fai Terrace.

When paramedics tried to put Bokhary on a stretcher to take her to hospital she refused and sat on the ground before getting back into her car.

Police asked her to take a breathalyzer test which she also refused and tried to walk off. She then slapped a police officer who was blocking her way, was handcuffed and taken to Wan Chai Police Station.

The 34-year-old driver of the coach, surnamed So, passed the breathalyzer test. Neither driver was injured.

When asked for comment, Commissioner of Police Tang King-shing said: "That citizen paid no respect to law enforcers at all. She forgets that law enforcers maintain law and order for public safety."

Tang said officers will deal with each case fairly and will take their personal safety into account.

In December 2008, Bokhary was sentenced at Eastern Magistracy to 240 hours of community service for assaulting a policewoman and a taxi driver. She was also ordered to pay the taxi driver HK$1,000 as compensation.
