A TV newsman caught masturbating naked upstairs on a double-decker bus has been put on a good behavior bond and told to manage his stress better.

Journalist Chiu Yu-kit quit his job at ATV shortly after he was seen standing on a seat alone on the top deck of a New World First Bus in Tseung Kwan O.

An off-duty police officer jogging past the bus as it stood at traffic lights saw Chiu facing out of the window at the time of the offense, Kwun Tong Court was told.

Principal magistrate Josiah Lam Wai-kuen yesterday put Chiu, 31, on a one-year HK$1,000 good behavior bond.

He had earlier pleaded guilty to indecency in public.

The court heard that Chiu was the sole passenger on the upper deck of the bus around 1am on July 31. When the bus, which was heading for the Clear Water Bay peninsula, stopped at traffic lights near Tseung Kwan O MTR station, the off-duty police officer saw Chiu standing on a seat.

He was masturbating while facing a window and appeared to be naked, the court was told.

The officer boarded the bus, revealed his identity to the driver and told him what he had seen before going to the upper deck where he found Chiu fully clothed sitting in the middle of the compartment.

Chiu was arrested later by another officer and admitted under caution he did it because he wanted to ease his stress.

Lam imposed the bond after it was suggested by the defense.

He said Chiu should talk to others or exercise when he was stressed and if that failed he should seek counseling from doctors or experts.

Lam said he hoped Chiu will treasure the chance to correct himself.

Chiu, who is not married, has been reporting since graduating from journalism school in 2000.

He began working for ATV in October 2004 and resigned days after his arrest.
