The worst of times for Fred Ma

Monday, August 31, 2009

Former secretary for commerce and economic development Frederick Ma Si- hang has had his fair share of sorrow.

He told a radio program yesterday his worst patches included his transfer to New York where he was often a verbal punching bag while learning the ropes of the banking industry, and the death of his mother later.

He also wept when, after his resignation in July last year, he was at long last able to go to Taiwan to visit his favorite uncle Tsang Kai-wing - the father of actor Eric Tsang Chi-wai who has been on the Independent Commission Against Corruption's wanted list since 1976. The row over rehabilitation school Zheng Sheng College has also deeply affected him.

His discovery that he was suffering from cavernous hemangioma - jumbled growths of blood vessels - may have led him to quit his Cabinet position, but Ma has not been taking the health complication lying down. He has been leading a healthy life.

The evidence of that is that he has shed eight kilograms.
