Not the breast of starts for Gary Chan

Thursday, September 11, 2008

It looks like undeclared war has broken out between newly elected Gary Chan Hak-kan, right, of the DAB and "Long Hair" Leung Kwok-hung of the League of Social Democrats.

It began with "Long Hair" ignoring Chan's extended hand when election results were announced on Monday, and the maverick wasted no time in having a sly dig at Chan's English.

The former chief executive's special assistant was heard saying in an interview: "We will try our breast not to just criticize the government policy.'"Leung's riposte was: "I will try my best but not try our breast."

Chan yesterday admitted his English is poor and that he would "try his best" to improve it.

"I studied at a Chinese medium school. You can't say the English level of local students is poor because of my case."

Chan has a master's degree from Chinese University.

He packed in his HK$70,000 a month job as Donald Tsang Yam- keung's special assistant to run in Sunday's Legislative Council election, and won.
