Crowning glory

Monday, November 09, 2009

Phil Mickelson held off a resurgent Ernie Els in a tense finale to win both the WGC-HSBC Champions and a personal battle with Tiger Woods, who faded to finish sixth.

The American world No2 showed nerves of steel to claim the US$1.2-million (HK$9.36 million) winner's check by a stroke from the South African after hitting 69 for a 17-under-par total of 271.

Ryan Moore of the US was third after a 68 for 15-under, while Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy shot a 63 for fourth place.

Woods, who started two behind Mickelson, faded with a 72 and fell five off the pace alongside Germany's Martin Kaymer.

Mickelson's victory means he is the first to win the Shanghai tournament - upgraded this year to a World Golf Championship event - twice, after his triumph in 2007.

And it was the best possible way to finish a difficult season interrupted by a break to care for his wife and mother, who were both diagnosed with breast cancer.

"It feels terrific. It's my last event of the year and to finish the year like this is just wonderful," the left-hander said.

Els arrived at the 18th with a one-shot lead but found the water on his approach for bogey, spoiling a course record-equalling 63. World No4 Paul Casey pulled out of the final round and will also miss this week's Hong Kong Open after a recurrence of a torn rib muscle.
