Prostate cancer could not keep Dennis Hopper from a horse- racing classic at Santa Anita Park in California at the weekend. The 73-year-old actor and artist attended the Breeders' Cup in support of The V Foundation for Cancer Research, the official charity of the year-ending thoroughbred championships.
It was revealed last month that Hopper had been diagnosed with cancer, although he said at Santa Anita that he has battled it for nine years. He is now trying experimental treatment.
"It has great promise," said Hopper, who has just finished shooting a second season of Crash, a TV version of the Oscar- winning 2004 film. "Everything's good right now."
But Hopper recently canceled an appearance at an exhibition of his artwork and photography at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne, and he went into hospital in New York last month with dehydration.
Hopper is one of racing's best-known fans. Last year he was a big winner at the Breeders' Cup with a US$17,000 (HK$132,360) trifecta ticket. Whether he backed winner Zenyatta this year was not known. ASSOCIATED PRESS
