Football bets link in murder of Chinese

Monday, October 27, 2008

A 30-year-old man has been charged with the murder of two Chinese graduates whose bodies were found in their flat in Newcastle, northeast England.

Guang Huicao was arrested in connection with the murders of Xi Zhou and Zhen Xingyang, both 25. He will make his first court appearance today.

Two other Chinese men arrested were on bail pending further inquiries. Another 14 people, also Chinese, were arrested on suspicion of burglary and immigration offenses but have been bailed.

Xi and Zhen ran an internet betting scam, according to reports. They recruited people online to send live updates from British football matches to China, where the games are broadcast with a slight delay. The tipoffs enabled syndicates to place bets with the benefit of advance information.

Police said Zhen suffered a prolonged assault before being stabbed, and Xi may have been asphyxiated as well as stabbed. Their cat was drowned.
