CUHK Shenzhen next on agenda

Tuesday, April 15, 2014

Chinese University of Hong Kong has announced that current vice-chancellor and president Joseph Sung Jao-yiu will stay on for three more years.

One of Sung's main tasks during his second term will be the inauguration of the university's Shenzhen campus, which is almost ready to accept admission applications.

Designed by Rocco Design Architects, the new school will have a "Million Boulevard" and a college system like its Sha Tin counterpart.

As financial support from late movie mogul Run Run Shaw's foundation is forthcoming, it will also likely have a Shaw College.

At the start, Chinese University comprised three colleges - New Asia, Chung Chi and United - with Shaw added later as the fourth one.

Sung's predecessor, Lawrence Lau Juen-yee, an expert fundraiser, garnered sufficient resources to set up five more colleges during his term: Morningside, SH Ho, CW Chu, Wu Yee Sun and Lee Woo Sing, named after their benefactors.

Each of these colleges has its unique feature. For example, the Shanghai restaurant at Lee Woo Sing College is a popular attraction for visitors.

It is as good as the famous restaurant in Central operated by the Kiangsu Chekiang and Shanghai Residents' (HK) Association, co- founded by the college's sponsor, Lee Woo Sing.

As the Lee Woo Sing eatery has a picturesque setting, it also attracts a sizable outside clientele.

Customers love its xiao long bao (steamed pork bun), sheng jian bao (pan-fried bun) and Dongpo pork dishes.

Someone in the
CUHK community told me that students are particularly fond of the restaurant for two reasons - it has delicious Movenpick ice cream and a serene evening atmosphere with the warm glow of path lights outside - making it a perfect after-class meeting place. Siu Sai-wo is publisher of Sing Tao Daily
