Helicopter role study

John Flint

Saturday, December 14, 1996

An expanded role for helicopters in urban fires is to be considered by the Government Flying Service and the Fire Services Department.

The performance of two helicopter crews in rescuing four trapped workers from the Garley Building roof may prompt fire chiefs to consider using them more often.

The Flying Service has to water-bomb hillfires, which average about 15 per week. In recent years they have only helped during three urban fires.

Flying Service Controller Brian Cluer said operational procedures would also come up in the broad-ranging review.
