Former French first lady Ségolène Royal makes comeback from political wilderness
(04-02 18:17)

French President Francois Hollande has approved a new Cabinet that includes his ex-companion and one time socialist presidential candidate Ségolène Royal (Pictured) as minister of environment and energy. Royal is the mother of his four children, who are now adults.
Former journalist Valerie Trierweiler, became Hollande’s partner a few months after he parted company with Royal. But in late January, Hollande confirmed his separation from Trierweiler after an affair with a actress Julie Gayet was exposed by a magazine.
The new government was named after discussions between new Prime Minister Manuel Valls and Hollande, and follow a crushing defeat for their Socialist Party in municipal voting last week.
Laurent Fabius and Jean-Yves Le Drian remain foreign affairs and defense ministers. The Finance Ministry portfolio was split between two Socialists: Michel Sapin in charge of finance, and Arnaud Montebourg to be responsible for industry and economy.
