Lee Kuan Yew in hospital
(02-04 19:13)

Singapore's former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew is recovering from an infection in hospital, his press secretary said in a statement on Tuesday.
Lee, 90, has been hospitalized in Singapore General Hospital since Sunday with a fever and a bad cough caused by an infection, and is currently on antibiotics and recovering.
Lee will not be attending the annual Chinese New Year dinner of his Tanjong Pagar constituency on Tuesday evening.
"He has been advised by his doctors to avoid public appearances. As such, he will not be able to attend the Tanjong Pagar GRC (group representation constituency) Chinese New Year Dinner this evening. He would like to wish all Tanjong Pagar residents as well as Singaporeans a Happy Chinese New Year," his press secretary said in a statement.
Lee has regularly attended the annual dinner over the years, during which he would make keynote speeches. But he missed the event last year for the first time due to health reasons.
Lee has obviously reduced his public appearances in recent months due to health reasons.
Born in September 1923, Lee is undoubtedly the most influential statesman in Singapore. He served as prime minister from 1959 to 1990 and held the advisory roles of senior minister and, later, minister mentor before leaving the cabinet in 2011. --Xinhua
