Hang Seng off to a good start in new year, Shanghai shares fall

Stocks in Hong Kong began the first trading day of the new year advancing 0.63 percent in the first few minutes. The benchmark Hang Seng Index added 146.37 points to 23,452.76.
In Shanghai, stocks were down 0.31 percent. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index slipped 6.53 points to 2,109.45.—AFP
