|Ricky Wong takes the judicial route over free TV licensing fiasco
Hong Kong Television Network Chairman Ricky Wong Wai-kay said today he will launch a judicial review against the Executive Council’s decision to not award him a free television broadcast license.
Last week, the government awarded two free TV licenses to PCCW and Cable TV. Wong’s HKTV lost out, triggering demands for an explanation by him and the public who have rallied to the perceived injustice.
He also deplored comments made in the morning today by Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, who brushed aside suggestions that political factors had weighed on the licensing decision.
He described Leung’s remarks as an attempt to add fuel to the fire.
Wong reiterated that he himself does not hold strong political views.
HKTV plans to file for judicial review in two to three weeks, Wong said.
He also revealed that he learnt in May that three licenses would not be awarded and that he sought to change his proposal, but was not allowed to do so.
