Beijing believed to 'screen' 2017 CE candidates
(03-19 14:33)

A former local deputy to the National People's Congress, Ng Hong-man, says it's inevitable there'll be a screening process to eliminate candidates for the 2017 chief executive election who are unacceptable to Beijing.
He was speaking a day after the Chief Executive, Leung Chun-ying, briefed President Xi Jinping on Hong Kong's preparations for universal suffrage in the 2017 poll, RTHK reports.
Ng said the one-man one-vote system adopted in western countries is not suitable for Hong Kong. He said it was unavoidable that the chief executive nomination committee will screen out candidates that Beijing doesn't like.
The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress has appointed Li Fei as the new director of the Hong Kong Basic Law Committee, replacing Qiao Xiaoyang who's retired.
