Family helpless over Filipino set for Saudi execution

Philippine government has appealed to Saudi Arabia to extend the deadline for the execution of a Filipino man convicted of murder so it can raise compensation money to pay the victim's family.
Joselito Zapanta is to be executed today unless his family offers US$1 million, AP reports. Zapanta was sentenced to death for killing his Sudanese landlord in 2009.
A foreign affairs spokesman said the president has written to Saudi King Abdullah requesting more time.
Only about U$245,055 had been raised in private and government contributions.
