(03-06 15:07)
New HIV cases jumped 17 percent last year to 513 - the highest annual total since the first case was diagnosed in 1984. Eighty-six new AIDS infections were also reported by the Department of Health in 2012.
This brings the cumulative total of reported HIV cases locally to over 5,700, while more than 1,300 people have developed full blown AIDS, RTHK reports.
Wong Ka-hing with the Centre for Health Protection said nearly half of the new infections were acquired through homosexual or bisexual contact.
