(Update) Hu meets Lien in Beijing
(02-26 12:10)

President Hu Jintao has praised the efforts made by the honorary chairman of Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang party, Lien Chan, to improve cross-strait relations.
During a meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Hu shook hands with Lien and members of his delegation. The outgoing president wished them good health and a happy new year.
Speaking to Lien, Hu praised his work over the past eight years to improve and foster ties. Hu described him as an old and good friend.
He also said relations had made significant progress in recent years -- opening up a platform for peaceful links. For his part, Lien said cross-strait peace was the right way forward.
Lien yesterday met Communist Party leader Xi Jinping, in the highest-level talks since Xi took office in November. Xi expressed confidence in maintaining and boosting ties.
