Abode hearing begins
(02-26 12:08)

The Court of Final Appeal has begun hearing a challenge to the right of abode law.
The outcome of the case will determine whether foreign domestic helpers have the right to apply for permanent residency. It may also reopen the case on whether children born in Hong Kong to mainland parents can enjoy right of abode, RTHK reports.
During the hearing, a lawyer representing Leung Wing-kay, a child born locally to a mainland mother, requested the court to hear his submissions on the issue. But the request was rejected.
Richard Tsoi Yiu-cheong of the Society for Community Organisation, who is assisting the child, said he was disappointed with the decision.
He expressed hope that the court would consider all the factors involved in the case.
