New technology to speed up rail checks

MTR has introduced a new ultrasound technology to double the speed of its inspection of rail tracks. The new HK$46-million system mounted on a locomotive can complete checking the Kwun Tong Line, for example, in one night instead of two in the past. However, the new scanner failed to locate a crack near the Ngau Tau Kok station.
The transit operator said it is still checking the crack found earlier in a section near the Ngau Tau Kok station. The track has been given to laboratory for further test to determine the cause, it said.
