Renovating firm owner found verdict in building collapse case
(02-20 18:40)
The owner of a renovation company has been found guilty of carrying out building works which are highly likely to have caused the collapse of an old Hung Hom tenement block in which four people died.
The collapse three years ago raised concerns about the safety of many of Hong Kong's old and dilapidated buildings, RTHK reports.
The magistrate in Kowloon City court said Chu Wai-wing, 75, carried out work on a pillar and platform at a shop on the ground floor, without first ensuring it was safe by putting up steel bars to support the building.
Expert prosecution and defence witnesses had agreed that vibration from the renovation work could have affected the building's structural stability. Sentencing was adjourned until March 6.
