Lamma IV got certificate despite kids' lifejackets missing

Marine Department still issued a certificate to Hongkong Electric's Lamma IV even it was not equipped with any children's lifejackets, the inquiry into the ferry collision near Lamma Island on October 1 last year has heard today.
The certificate indicated there were children's lifejackets on the vessel. Marine manager Tang Wan-on of Hongkong Electric reiterated that the company has never bought any children's lifejackets.
Tang said he asked the crew members about the children's lifejackets and they all knew there was not any.
He admitted that he neglected the requirement to put children's lifejackets on board. But he also noted that he was surprised the certificate indicated there were even the Marine Department has checked the life-saving facilities on board.
The certificate of 2011 and 2012 stated that there were children's lifejackets on board of Lamma IV.
Commission chairman Justice Michael Lunn ordered to summon the involved Marine Department officer and ship inspection record.
