UK lawmakers back gay marriage
(02-06 10:52)
Members of parliament in Britain have voted to back marriage between same-sex couples. The measure passed by 400 votes to 175, allowing the legislation to cleared its first hurdle on the path to becoming law.
Prime Minister David Cameron described the move as "an important step forward" that strengthens society, RTHK reports.
But it's thought about 140 lawmakers from his Conservative Party voted against the plan.
The bill will have to go through more detailed parliamentary debates and a vote in the House of Lords, where a vote in favour is likely given the strong support.
If it becomes law, the proposed bill would enable same-sex couples to get married in both civil and religious ceremonies, provided that the religious institution consents.
