Expert says smog more dangerous than SARS
(01-31 12:05)
The recent severe pollution in mainland cities is more scary than Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), said Zhong
Nanshan, director of the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Diseases.
"When SARS patients can be quarantined, no one can get away from pollution," Zhong said in an interview with state-run CCTV.
There are pollutants which are harmful to the respiratory tract and the cardiovascular system. And it's easier for the little PM2.5 particles to get deep inside the respiratory tract, which will aggravate the illnesses of patients who have diseases like asthma and pneumonia, he said.
Zhong urges the government to allow those, including policemen, wear masks while they are on duty outdoors.
