Schools, univeristies faulted for exposing student info
(01-15 11:30)
Personal data of more than 8,500 students have been exposed on websites of nine secondary schools and two tertiary institutions, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data found.
Nine secondary schools confirmed that website administrators mistakenly put students' information, such as names, student numbers and phone numbers and email addresses of students as well as that of their parents. More than 2,000 students were affected.
Meanwhile, same problems were seen in the School of
Continuing and Professional Education under the Hong Kong Institute of Education, and Institute of Further Education of Lingnan University. Personal information of more than 6,000 students can be found through search engines.
The office slammed the two colleges -- which should have better resources and technology than highschools -- for failing to protect students' privacy.
