Focus on health of equestrian athletes

Authorities will be on the lookout for for 10 common symptoms indicating a contagious disease displayed by any of the athletes taking part in the Olympic equestrian events in Hong Kong, health officials said.

The syndromes include respiratory infection with fever, bloody diarrhea and vomiting. About 2,000 health care professionals will be on duty to look after the spectators, athletes and staff during the games at both the venues and the Olympic village in Sha Tin.

Equestrian event chief medical manager and Director of Health Lam ping-yam said there is no indication of an heightened risk of a terrorist attack, including bio-chemical attack during the Games.
