Taiwan displays Banksy works

An exhibition of works by the England-based street artist Banksy will open in Taipei on March 16, featuring more than 20 pieces, including the well-known Girl with Balloon, Smiling Cooper and CCCP.
Curated by Phillips auction house, the "Banksy: The Authentic Rebel" exhibition will be held at Bellavita, a shopping mall in Taipei City's Xinyi district, CNA reports.
Describing Banksy as a visionary and trailblazer at the forefront of street art since the 1990s, Miety Heiden, deputy chairman and head of private sales of Phillips, said the works highlighted in this exhibition illustrate the artist's achievements over the last two decades.
Banksy, whose identity has not been revealed to the public, rose to fame by ridiculing war, capitalism, hypocrisy and greed through graffiti, paintings and screenprints.
Inspired by the thriving graffiti community in his home city, Bristol, Banksy's works began appearing on trains and walls in 1993, and by 2001 his blocky, spray-painted art had cropped up all over the United Kingdom, becoming instantly recognizable, said Phillips.
The mysterious artist once again caught the world's attention when he partially shredded his framed stencil spray painting Girl With Balloon at Sotheby's in London last year using a mechanical device he had hidden in the frame.
The exhibition runs until March 24.
