Beauty group fends off allegations of malpractice

A beauty group that was named and shamed by the Consumer Council has dismissed allegations that is was using high-pressure sales tactics, saying it believes all its customers made purchases willingly.
In a statement read out at a press conference by Pretty Beauty Centre's customer service director, Carol Cheng, the company defended itself against allegations of malpractice, which included the unauthorized use of customers' credit cards and taking an uncooperative attitude in resolving complaints, RTHK reports.
Cheng said the group has strict training and guidelines for employees. But she said the group admits that some individual staff might not have done their best when handling complaints, and apologized for that.
Cheng refused to take any questions from reporters, saying the group has referred some complaints to its lawyer.
The consumer watchdog had on Monday had said it got 82 complaints about the group in the past three years, forcing customers to cough up HK$2.3 million.
