A vice-chairman of the board of trustees of the New Asia College at Chinese University, believes students should have freedom to discuss different issues, including Hong Kong independence, RTHK reports.

But Chan Chi-sum said putting up banners advocating it is too much.

On how such incidents should be handled, Chan said it is something he believes the Chinese University's management will discuss when they meet later today.

Chan also said calls by pro-government lawmakers for the education chief to follow up on how some universities deal with independence banners won't exert any pressure on universities.

Universities get many opinions like this, but the ultimate decision is the university’s responsibility, he said.-Photo: RTHK
