Ronny Tong says court set example by jailing activistsLocal | 18 Aug 2017 11:34 am
Veteran democrat Ronny Tong has backed the jailing of three pro-democracy activists, but said the sentences were heavy.
The executive councillor and barrister said that by jailing Joshua Wong Chi-fung, Nathan Law Kwun-chung, and Alex Chow Yong-kang for six to eight months, the court had tried to set an example to deter people from committing violence at public gatherings.
"If everybody were to say that their cause is a noble one, and therefore there is no need to have a regard for law, then as the judgement said, Hong Kong would fall into lawlessness," he said.
He said the appeals court did not have much sympathy for the three defendants, most probably because they were unrepentant over their actions.
He told RTHK’s Mike Weeks that there had been a series of fundamental mistakes made by the lower courts that had to be rectified by the Court of Appeal to uphold the rule of law. Photo: RTHK
