Hakka Village homes to be turned into guest houses

The Town Planning Board has approved a plan to turn parts of a 400-year-old Hakka village in northeastern New Territories into guest houses, but with conditions.

The Hong Kong Countryside Foundation has put forward the proposal to revitalize 12 village houses in Lai Chi Wo near Sha Tau Kok.

It will have to install fire safety equipment and sewage facilities that meet government requirements, as well as transportation links.

The 90-hectare village includes over 200 traditional Hakka homes, many of them empty since the 1960s.

Conservationists hope the HK$50 million project will serve as a model for some 70 other country park enclaves.-RTHK
