Public outcry saves gran from cardboard chargesLocal | 19 Jun 2017 8:57 pm
The government decided today to drop a prosecution against a 75-year-old woman who was arrested earlier this month for selling cardboard without a hawker license.
The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department said they came to the decision after seeking advice from the Department of Justice.
The apparent change of heart followed rising public anger over the prosecution. The Civic Party said it had collected more than 14,000 signatures over the weekend to condemn the move.
The woman was originally due to appear in court on Wednesday.
She was caught taking HK$1 from a domestic helper after giving her a piece of cardboard.
Six FEHD officers surrounded the elderly woman and confiscated the cart she uses for collecting cardboard before taking her in for questioning. She said she was later released from a police station on bail of HK$30.-RTHK
