The Hong Kong Observatory said they will consider issuing the gale or storm signal No 8 within the next few hours.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Waglan Island and Sai Kung were 67 and 42 kilometers per hour respectively, the forecaster said.

Although the region of gale wind associated with Merbok is rather small and mainly located to the east and south of its center, gale force wind could still be expected to affect the city, in particular the eastern parts of the territory, when Merbok comes very close later today, the forecaster said.

According to the their current forecast track, Merbok is expected to make landfall within 100 kilometers of Hong Kong around midnight tonight.
