The government said the office for Chief Executive-elect has been set up to ensure a smooth transition.
It will, among other things, support the winner of the leadership race in forming a governing team, as well as help prepare a policy plan for the new government.
Postmaster General Jessie Ting took charge of the office in Champion Tower at Central – Hong Kong’s most expensive business area – with about 25 officials based there.
Ting worked under Chief Executive front-runner Carrie Lam when Lam was development minister.
The temporary office has been hit with controversy over its original fitting-out cost of HK$15 million. But the administration later lowered the price tag to about HK$10 million.
The total cost of running the office for three months will be about HK$35 million.-RTHK
