Border police in southwestern Yunnan province have captured five suspects for smuggling 20 tons of frozen beef into China, local authorities said today, Xinhua reports.

After receiving a tip-off, police at the China-Vietnam border county of Maguan intercepted 10 suspected off-road vehicles in Jinchang Township on November 6, from which they seized a total of 20 tons of frozen beef.

The suspects confessed that the frozen meat was smuggled from Vietnam and lacked the necessary paperwork.

Meat smuggling is frequent in Maguan county in recent years, and local police have been stepping up efforts to crack down on such cases.
