Government: Soldiers clean up roads on voluntary basis

Local | 16 Nov 2019 10:00 pm

Government spokesperson said that PLA soldiers were cleaning up the roads on voluntary basis, and the government did not ask for assistance from the garrison.

This came after lawmakers from the pan-democratic camp condemned the PLA soldiers for leaving the barrack to help with clearing up the streets, while also seeking a clarification from the government.

In a joint statement, pro-democracy lawmakers accused the PLA soldiers of violating the Basic Law as well as the Garrison Law, saying that the SAR government is colluding with the Chinese army to work around existing laws, which is a breach of “One Country, Two System”.
