Shaken by rampaging mob, Yuen Long plays safe

Following an unprecedented bout of violence at the Yuen Long MTR station against protesters and bystanders led by an organized, white T-shirted mob of about 100 armed with clubs and metal rods, the district was largely deserted today.

Among the 45 people wounded in the brutal beatings was a pregnant woman who was seen sprawled on the floor. The mob was also seen charging repeatedly into an MTR carriage at Yuen Long station and beating passengers with clubs and rods.

The police were widely condemned by residents and lawmakers for a delayed response and for not making arrests. But the police said they faced mutiple demands for deployment on a night of protests.

There were also allegations about collusion between police and Yuen Long triads, who are suspected in the attacks. The police denied the claims.

Most shops in Yoho Mall closed early today amid fears of more violence in the afternoon. Some shops in Tuen Mun V City also shut for the day. There were also rumors that triads are massing in Yuen Long and Tsuen Wan.

The Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, strongly condemned the “shocking” assaults in Yuen Long, saying there was blatant disregard of the law.

"Violence is not a solution to any problem. Violence will only breed more violence,'' she said.
