Taiwan today condemned the violent attacks on people by a mob in Yuen Long last night and urged the Hong Kong government to implement democratic procedures and communicate with the people to mend social rifts.

The Office of the President said it is concerned about the city and that people's peaceful pursuit of freedom and democracy should not be treated by the state violently.

It also pointed out that the current situation in Hong Kong proves that only by consolidating Taiwan's democratic system and resolutely opposing “one country, two systems,” the island's freedoms will be safeguarded.

The opposition Kuomintang Party also condemned the violence and urged a dialogue between the Hong Kong government and people.
