Taiwan's Taitung county shut down schools and offices on Green Island and Orchid Island starting from 6:00 p.m. due to the approach of tropical storm Danas.
As of 4:00 p.m local time, the system was located 400 kilometers southeast of Taiwan's southernmost tip near Eluanbi, moving westward at a speed of 17 kilometers per hour, according to Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau, CNA reports.
It was packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kph and gusts of 90 kph, according to the bureau.
Green Island is just over 30 km off the coast of Taitung city while Orchid Island is nearly 70 km off the coast of Eluanbi. They lie close to the expected path of the tropical storm, which is forecast move in a northward direction over waters east of Taiwan.
The CWB also issued a torrential rain and gust warning for eastern Yilan, Hualien, Taitung counties and the Hengchun Peninsula in Pingtung county at 1:00 p.m.
