May retail sales drop by 1.3pc, electrical goods wost performer

Retail sales in May fell by 1.3 percent from the same month the year before, to HK$40 billion.

Sales of jewelry, watches and clocks, and valuable gifts fell by 2.7 percent, while that of commodities in supermarkets dropped by 0.8 percent, the Census and Statistics Department, reported.

Retail sales in Hong Kong have been fotrecast to fall by 5 percent on-year to HK$460 billion this year.

Apparel sales fell by 4.6 percent and sales of electrical goods and other consumer durable goods, not elsewhere classified fared the worst, falling by 14.8 percent.

Sales at optical shops dropped by 11.3 percent.

And revised estmates for April show that retail sales dropped by 4.5 percent from a year earlier.

In the first five months retail sales declined by 1.8 percent compared with the same period in 2018.
Excluding the effect of price changes over the same period, the provisional estimate of the volume of total retail sales in May was down by 1.7 percent compared with a year earlier.
