Hong Kong and regional stocks puled back today ahead of G-20 meetings in Japan at the end of the week.
The Hang Seng Index tumbled by 1.15 percent, or 327.02 points at 28,185.98.
The Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index gave up 0.87 percent, or 26.07 points at 2,982.07. The Shenzhen Stock Exchange Composite Index shed 0.99 percent, or 15.63 points at 1,560.46.
Australian shares closed lower. The S&P/ASX 200 Index lost 7.4 points, or 0.1 percent, to 6,658. The broader All Ordinaries lost 11 points, or 0.2 percent, to end at 6,734.5.
Stocks also retreated in Japan. The Nikkei 225 share average was down by 0.43 percent at 21,193.81 at the close.
South Korean stocks closed lower, led by losses in tech and bio shares.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) lost 4.69 points, or 0.22 percent, to close at 2,121.64. Trade volume was moderate at 634 million shares worth 4.1 trillion won (US$3.5 billion), with losers outnumbering gainers 574 to 257.
