HK, China shares fall sharply at close

Hong Kong and China stocks slumped at the close today. The blue chip Hang Seng Index shed more than 500 points to end the trading session, while Hong Kong protesters braved tear gas and pepper spray outside the Legislative Council. 

The Hang Seng Index shed 1.85 percent, or 514.44 points at 27,274.90.

In mainland China, the benchmark Shanghai Stock Exchnage Composite Index was down by 0.56 percent, at 2,909.38 points and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange Composite Index closed 0.92 percent lower at 8,954.71 points.
