Norway, a leading supplier of fresh salmon to Hong Kong for many years, assured today that its produce is “perfectly safe and healthy.''
This came amid reports by the Consumer Council in Hong Kong finding round worm eggs as well as a heavy concentration of methylmercury in some salmon sashimi samples it tested. One of 31 salmon samples was identified as rainbow trout, and 30 were Atlantic salmon, the council reported.
The Norwegian Seafood Council said exporters shipped more than 14,000 tons of fresh salmon to Hong Kong in 2018. The council has an office in Shanghai.
The Norwegian Seafood Council’s head office is located in Tromsø, Norway.
“We appreciate the Consumer Council’s effort in safeguarding food safety and protecting consumers’ health. We are following the matter announced today closely,'' the seafood council said in a statement.
Extensive research and testing shows that Norwegian salmon is safe to eat raw as sashimi and sushi, the council assured.
According to the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research, parasites have never been found in Norwegian salmon intended for human consumption.
According to the authoritative scientific study on Norwegian salmon, done by the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research, it concluded that salmon does not contain parasites. The study confirms the conclusion by the European Food Safety Authority that Norwegian salmon is safe for raw consumption, the statement said.
The salmon industry is strictly regulated and monitored by Norwegian food authorities, and Norwegian food business operators must continuously assess and have systems in place to ensure that production methods do not present a hazard to health.
EU and EEA regulations provide clear guidelines on how to handle fish that is to be eaten raw. Norwegian farmed salmon has been granted a special freezing exemption. The absence of Anisakis parasites is ensured by salmon feed being heat treated as high temperatures kill parasites.
